Roger Melville enlisted in the US Air Force wanting to serve his country. He comes from a long line of military men, including his father, who served in Korea, grandfather in WWI, and two uncles in WWII.
Roger started his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, and was later based at Bitburg Air Force Base in Germany during the Vietnam War, where he served in security. After returning to the United States, Roger left the Air Force and attended NC State where he studied Animal Husbandry. He worked as a civilian for a short time at FCX Egg Division in Charlotte, NC, and later signed up with the 145th TAC Clinic, NC Air National Guard Unit based in Charlotte, NC. He attended the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. It was during this time with the 145th that he became the first full time Bio-Environmental ENGR TECH for the NCANG and was responsible for the start up of occupational medical programs. Roger also established the first environmental protection monitoring program which was approved by Andrews AFB.
After leaving the NCANG, Roger continued his military career by joining the NC Army National Guard in 1992, also based in Charlotte, where he served in personnel records and military pay. He later retired in 2010.
Roger enjoys retirement and is very interested in world history. He recently donated all his Air Force and Army uniforms and other military items to the NC National Guard Museum in Raleigh, NC. Roger was the first Vice President for the NC Air National Guard Alumni Association based in Charlotte. He is a life member of NCNG Association, Past Commander of American Legion Post 266 and Current Vice Commander.
Purple Heart homes will be renovating Roger’s master bathroom and adding an accessible shower, along with replacing the banisters on the front and side exterior stairs. Repairs to the exterior of his home will be made, along with paint touch ups inside and outside. A walkway to the front door will also be installed. Roger says, “it warms my heart and brings tears of joy to my eyes. I am so thankful to Purple Heart Homes for the work they do.
